At a time when security of women is a biggest issue in the country, these women fighter pilots have done India extremely proud.

The Indian Air Force on Saturday inducted the first batch of women pilots into its fighter squadron.

Flying Cadets Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh created history in the process. The trio will have to undergo advanced training for a year on Hawk aircraft in Bidar, Karnataka before they get to fly supersonic warplanes.

This landmark event comes even as both the Army and Navy do not have any plans to induct women into the infantry, armoured corps or artillery, nor allow them to serve on board warships. And, even in the IAF, entry into the combat stream as short service commission (SSC) officers has been done on an experimental basis for just five years.

But that doesn't stop us from celebrating these three women.

At a time when security of women is a big issue in the country, these women pilots have done India extremely proud. They have become an inspiration for girls across the country who dream of joining the IAF.

Many, including celebrities and political leaders, took to social media to congratulate the trio and wish them luck.
