KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday accepted the views of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) that it could not permit Kandararu Mohanaru to act as thantri and to perform rituals at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple. Mohanaru had not been permitted to enter the sanctum sanctorum of Sabarimala temple to perform any rites as the thantri, after the blackmailing case. The TDB said it took the decision in order to respect the religious sentiments of the Ayyappa devotees. “The case registered by the police on the complaint filed by Mohanaru is yet to be disposed of. The issue is still alive in the minds of the devotees. If permission was granted to Mohanaru to enter the sanctum sanctorum, it would hurt the religious sentiments of the Ayyappa devotees,” TDB standing counsel V V Nandagopal Nambiar submitted. The affidavit was filed by TDB in response to a petition filed by Kandararu Maheswararu against the Devaswom’s decision to deny permission to his son Mohanaru for assisting him in performing the ceremonial rites. The TDB further said that considering the body ailments of Maheswararu, it had no objection in permitting the son of Mohanaru to assist the former in performing thantric rites. However, the court said that the board would be open for a reconsideration after the termination of the criminal proceedings in which Mohanaru was shown as a witness.
