MALAPPURAM: Marking the beginning of this season’s Haj pilgrimage, the first flight carrying pilgrims from the state will take off from the Karipur Airport around 10.45 am on Thursday. It will be the first flight leaving India with Haj pilgrims this season, said the officials. The registration of the pilgrims who have been allotted seats in the first flight started at the Haj House at Karipur on Wednesday evening. As per official data, 7,993 pilgrims will be leaving the state to perform Haj. A Haj cell equipped with 30 government officials deputed from various departments is functioning at the Karipur Haj House to carry out the registration process. Pilgrims should register with the cell at least 18 hours before the takeoff time of the flight, informed the officials.As per official sources, 27 flights, each having a seating capacity of 300, will carry pilgrims from Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahe till October 15 from Karipur, which is the embarkation point for these pilgrims. To help the pilgrims and their relatives who are coming to Karipur, trains will have an extra stop at Feroke, which is the closest railway station. The relatives who come to see off the pilgrims are not allowed to follow them to the airport. Special arrangements are in place for them at the Haj House, said Haj officials. According to Haj committee chairman P T A Rahim, elaborate arrangements have been made at the Haj House for the pilgrims. “Twenty Haj volunteers have been deployed for round-the-clock service at the camp,” he said. A total of 130 volunteers will be deployed for managing the camp. Meanwhile, the District Medical Officer informed that the meningitis vaccination and polio vaccine distribution for the Haj pilgrims to be carried by private tour operators would be held at all taluk hospitals, Manjeri General Hospital and the Tirur District Hospital on Thursday and Friday.
