COIMBATORE: A fight between a pet dog owner and a woman who raises a street dog in TVS Nagar in suburban Thudiyalur turned ugly on Thursday with the former allegedly sending some men to assault her.The victim, Veeralakshmi (50), and her niece Srividya alleged that the police refused to intervene in time as the pet owner was a retired jailor. Besides, they charged that the officials of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) also displayed apathy in dealing with the incident.Veeralakshmi said she has been taking care of a street mongrel near her house for the past three years. Gunabalan, who stays in the ground floor of the building and owns a pet dog, had allegedly beaten the mongrel with a stick on Thursday evening as it had repeatedly come close to his pet dog.“On hearing the dog’s moans I rushed out and confronted Gunabalan. But he turned abusive. My niece Srividya who had come here on holiday called the SPCA office but no one turned up,” Veeralakshmi said on Friday. After a heated exchange of words, Veeralakshmi went back to her house. “Suddenly, about five to six men carrying iron rods barged in and began verbally abusing me. In the melee, someone hit me on the nose,” Veeralakshmi claimed.Srividya alleged that though she had informed the Thudiyalur Police Station, no one turned up. “When the police finally came after over two-and-a-half hours, they refused to take the complaint,” Veeralakshmi added. On Friday, the two women went to the Thudiyalur Police Station to lodge a complaint. But the police allegedly made them wait for six hours and registered the FIR only after they deleted a paragraph, which mentioned that the police did not intervene in time.“If the SPCA officials had intervened, the fracas could have been avoided,” said Srividya. When contacted, Thudiyalur station inspector Kanakasundaram said probe was on. He declined to comment on the charge that the police had refused to act in time.
