New Delhi: One of the most respected voices in Indian tennis, former non-playing captain of the team Naresh Kumar has called for Paes to be removed as captain to tide over the crisis.
"It was very apparent. It was very shocking and sad that there was total indiscipline in the team. Team members were talking independently to the press, which they should never have done," the former Davis Cupper told CNN-IBN.
"There was this party incident which was blown up and that Paes was indiscreet and mentioning it, and which got a retort from Bhupathi, and then eventually in the form of (Prakash) Amritraj. That is what sparked the whole thing and then Paes was hemmed in," he added.
"It's very difficult for a captain, especially one who talks straight and not diplomatically to tackle both Bhupathi, who is a 10-time Grand Slam winner, and also to have an Amritraj towering over him as the iconic personality of Vijay (Prakash Amritraj's father)," Naresh Kumar explains.
