New Delhi: Hispania Racing team principal Colin Kolles had created quite a stir when he threatened to lodge complaint at the Monaco GP against the teams using blown diffusers, an aerodynamic aid.
However, it now seems that HRT cars could be fitted with blown diffusers for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix as a part of the team's aerodynamic upgrade. This might also partly explain why Kolles didn't register a protest at Monaco.
A number of teams have been using the blown diffuser concept in their cars. The concept revolves around a sophisticated engine mapping system by which exhaust gases continue to be blown even when off-throttle.
The FIA had deemed the concept as infringement of technical regulations and had announced its intention of banning it from the Spanish GP.
However, after protests and suggestions from teams, it was decided that the issue would be discussed on June 16 at the Technical Working Committee.
In the meantime though, the use of diffusers could be challenged. Considering that HRT cars didn't have a blown diffuser and were struggling to make a mark, Kolles had announced that he would lodge a protest ahead of Monaco GP.
However, the HRT boss surprised everyone a few days later by ruling it out. The rumor was that he was told about the slim chances the team had of being successful with its protest.
Two weeks after Monaco GP, it has been learned that the team may introduce blown diffusers in Montreal. HRT cars have been at the back and have struggled to beat "their" competitor Virgin Racing.
It now remains to be seen if the introduction of blown diffusers would be enough to take the team forward.
