Chandigarh: A Chandigarh court on Monday remanded Gaganjit Singh Barnala, son of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, to judcial custody till August 28 in an alleged rape case.
Judicial Magistrate Atul Marya pronounced the order remanding Barnala, a sitting Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) legislator, to 14 days judicial custody in a jam-packed court-room in Chandigarh.
Several supporters of the MLA from his Dhuri Constituency raised slogans against Chandigarh police inside and outside the court premises.
"Pending investigations in the case, the accused is sent to 14 days of judicial custody," the judge said in his order.
Barnala is facing charges of raping his maid, who was undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Following his arrest on Saturday last, the court had remanded the MLA to one day police custody on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Chandigarh police has transferred the case to its crime branch.
