An Ugadi procession in Andhra Pradesh turned tragic after 13 children sustained injuries as a chariot came into contact with an overhead high-voltage electric wire. The incident took place at Tekur village in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Thursday.
The children electrocuted were rushed to a nearby hospital in Kurnool for treatment. Circle Inspector Kiran Kumar Reddy said all injuries were below ten per cent severity, and no fatalities were reported. The doctors also confirmed that there was no immediate threat to the children’s lives.
“13 children suffered injuries from electrocution after the culmination of the Ugadi Utsavam celebrations this morning. All injuries were reported to be below 10 per cent severity, with no fatalities recorded,” Kurnool Rural Police Station Circle Inspector Kiran Kumar Reddy was quoted by ANI as saying.
Panyam MLA Katasani Rambhupal Reddy and Nandyala Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Byreddy Shabari visited the hospital to meet with the injured children.
Expressing concern over the incident, TDP’s Byreddy Shabari stressed the need for preventive measures to avoid such incidents in future.
The festival of Ugadi marks the beginning of the New Year in the Telugu calendar. People of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka celebrate it on the first day of Chaitra Navratri.
