BHUBANESWAR: With road mishaps on the rise in the city, police on Tuesday cracked down on reckless and drunk drivers by conducting raids at multiple points of the Capital. At least 135 violators were booked by the cops during the drive. More than 30 persons were booked for reckless driving while another 20 were held for driving under influence of alcohol. The Commissionerate Police used breath alcohol analysers to book the violators. About six of those booked for drunk driving are autorickshaw drivers, police said. The police also deployed teams, with VHF sets, to keep a tab on speeding vehicles which are a major reason behind rising road mishaps. In January, the City recorded at least 58 accidents while February figure stood at 46. Last year, as many as 185 persons had died whereas 557 had sustained injuries in 599 cases of road accidents. Compared to 2010, last year, the numbers had shown a marginal decline. The teams were placed at major junctions such as Khandagiri, Rupali, Master Canteen, Kalpana, Kalinga Stadium, Jayadev Vihar and CRP Square.
