The Madras High Court sought a detailed report on NEET impersonations in other states from the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI). The High Court was hearing a bail petition filed by Rasheed, who was arrested by the Theni CB-CID police for having a connection with the case. The CB-CID deputy superintendent of police appeared before the court and complied that various documents have been collected in this regard and the colleges have also been sent instructions to find out the impersonators. He also submitted a letter seeking verification of the photos, while the finger prints have also been sent to UIDAI. However, no cooperation has been received from UIDAI as well as the director of medical education and other stakeholders.
The case: NEET impersonation case was filed in 2017 after senior officials of the Theni Government Hospital alleged that students used proxy candidates in the medical entrance exam. A complaint was also lodged by the dean of a medical college, AK Rajendran with the Tamil Nadu police and the investigation led to a series of arrests. It was found that the impersonators were paid a whopping amount of Rs 20 lakh to take the NEET exam onstudents’ behalf. Later, the court suspected that the case may not be confined to Tamil Nadu only as impersonators from other states were also involved. However, Justice M Nirmal Kumar observed that the court finds the case was not reported in any other states. He said that the investigation has been concentrated only on the students who had been admitted to Tamil Nadu. The Madurai district superintendent of police of CBI (anti-corruption branch)sought responses as to whether such malpractices were reported in other states.
Meanwhile, the counsel appearing for the petitioner complied that he had already been granted statutory bail by the trial court and hence, he is seeking permission from this court to withdraw the petition. The court has kept the petition pending and adjourned it to March 18.
