Director Shankar, known for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, has garnered attention once again as reports emerge regarding the completion of the much-awaited movie, Indian 2. Following the success of his previous venture, 2.0, Shankar started this ambitious project under Lyca Productions, starring veteran actor Kamal Haasan alongside Kajal Aggarwal, Rahul Preet Singh and others.
The journey of Indian 2 has not been without its share of challenges. From a tragic accident on set resulting in the loss of three lives to disagreements between the production house and the director, the film encountered numerous setbacks. Despite these hurdles, recent updates suggest that filming for Indian 2 has been in its final stages, marking the resolution of the longstanding issues surrounding the project. The unit is planning to shoot some scenes in the Northern part of Chennai and conclude the movie which is tentatively scheduled to release on August 15.
Excitement mounts as rumours swirl about the potential development of a third instalment in the Indian franchise. Furthermore, anticipation builds with reports of a forthcoming song in Indian 2, featuring a portrayal of Veerasekaran Senapathy, who has now become a grandfather. Viral images depicting paintings of Veerasekaran Senapathy – the character of Kamal Haasan – adorning local residences only add to the buzz surrounding the film.
Reflecting on the success of its predecessor, Indian (1996) remains a landmark in Tamil cinema, achieving industry-hit status and breaking box office records with earnings surpassing Rs 50 crore in India and overseas. Starring Kamal Haasan in a dual role, alongside a stellar cast including Manisha Koirala, the film grabbed audiences’ attention with its vigilante action theme and resonated across multiple languages through dubbed versions.
In September 2017, Shankar and Kamal Haasan jointly announced the sequel, Indian 2, with initial production handled by Dil Raju. However, subsequent changes saw Lyca Productions stepping in as the production house. With Haasan reprising his iconic role as Senapathy, the sequel commenced production in January 2019 but faced delays spanning over four years.
As fans eagerly await the release of Indian 2, the culmination of its tumultuous production journey promises a cinematic experience that pays homage to its predecessor while offering a fresh perspective on the vigilante saga. With Shankar’s directorial prowess and Haasan’s commanding presence, it is to be seen in how the audience welcomes Indian 2. As of now, Northern Chennai is waiting eagerly for the duo along with their unit.
