New Delhi: Supreme Court issued notice to the Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on a petition seeking quashing of tenders for the import of 57 lakh tonnes of wheat alleging that those are of sub-standard quality on Friday.
The petition, filed by environmental activist Vandana Shiva, alleged that there was either a dilution or change in the health standards for importing the wheat.
Maintaining that there was no need for the import of wheat, Shiva's counsel Pinky Anand alleged that the level of pesticides in the wheat to be imported are very high and there was a violation of Plant Quarantine Act 2003.
A Bench comprising Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice D K Jain sought the reply from the Government within three weeks.
Accepting the notice, Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian said, "We will examine the issue."
