No explosives were found by the Belgian police after a man was detained near a central Brussels shopping mall early on Tuesday.
However, the bomb alert that was issued after the suspect was seen loitering around the area triggered a meeting of the Prime minister Charles Michel and the national crisis response Centre.
The area around the City 2 shopping Centre, a major commercial hub in the Belgian capital, was also sealed off.
The man was arrested at around 10 am (IST) on Tuesday morning after reports claimed he was carrying explosives.
Belgium's crisis centre, which coordinates security measures, said a meeting, with the Prime Minister was held to discuss the incident.
"For the moment, the situation is under control," Prime Minister Charles Michel reportedly said after a meeting the national crisis response centre.
Bomb attacks on Brussels airport and the city's metro had killed 32 people in March 2016 which was later claimed by the terror organisation Islamic State.
