Passengers aboard a flight from Bangkok to Munich were left traumatised as a 63-year-old man began coughing up blood mid-flight before collapsing and dying. The incident, which occurred on February 8, unfolded in front of the man’s wife and other passengers, the Daily Mail newspaper reported.
The unnamed German man appeared visibly ill when he boarded the Airbus A380 aircraft, the British daily said, citing eyewitnesses. As the flight progressed, his condition rapidly deteriorated. Passengers rushed to his aid, offering chamomile tea and checking his pulse as he began coughing up blood into a bag on the Lufthansa flight.
Despite attempts to assist the man, including the arrival of a Polish medic onboard, the situation escalated when a “gush” of blood spurted from his mouth and nose, covering the cabin walls, the report said. Flight attendants made amateurish resuscitation attempts for approximately half an hour, but it became evident that the man could not be saved.
The pilot decided to return the aircraft to Bangkok, where it landed safely after 1.5 hours of flight time. The man was pronounced dead onboard, and medical emergency services and Thai authorities were notified upon landing. Passengers recounted the chaos and trauma onboard, with one passenger expressing regret for not doing more to prevent the tragedy. After landing back in Bangkok, passengers complained of being left without guidance for two hours before being rebooked on alternative flights.
A spokesperson for Lufthansa confirmed the medical emergency on flight LH773 and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased passenger. They said that privacy reasons prevented further details from being disclosed. This incident echoes a similar incident in January when a passenger was found dead in a plane toilet during a Jet2 flight from Tenerife to Manchester. Despite efforts by the crew, the passenger passed away, prompting the flight to divert to Cork, Ireland.
