This year, a number of Indian artists made their debut at the Cannes Film Festival. oOne among them was Arpan Kumar Chandel, also known by his stage name King. The red carpet interviews where celebrities talk about what they are wearing and representing at the festival put the spotlight on them. Bollywood diva Kiara Advani was trolled for allegedly faking her accent during the red carpet interactions. Now, it appears that King smartly bypassed this trolling by pointing to his accent’s flaws himself.
On Saturday, the 25-year-old shared a clip from his red carpet interview and wrote, “Jab aati nahi to accent hi nikalta hai desh se bahar, iykyk, par maza aagaya.” This loosely translates to, “My English accent only comes out when I’m out of the country, if you know you know, but I had a lot of fun.” People lauded the young rapper for not taking himself too seriously and showing a good sense of humour. His post got over two lakh likes.
An Instagram user observed, “This is so good when others were making fun of this clip. King himself posted a meme with his clip, this shows how you can take trolls positively and use it for you.”
Another person wrote, “Bro I don’t listen to your songs much!!! But this can happen with anyone and everyone!! standing on a bigger stage with a lot of other successful people to whom you may have been looking up when you started!! and you standing there is not a small thing! So it’s all Good Yeah!!!!”
An individual also remarked, “It’s sad how people are pointing out the accent and not that he’s representing India at the Cannes Red carpet.” Someone else noted, “That’s how you handle trolls.”
During his red carpet appearance, King explained that he was wearing an outfit by Anamika Khanna, accessories by Amrapali and shoes by Christian Louboutin. He further added that he is at the Cannes Film Festival to represent Indian music. Expressing gratitude at having the opportunity to attend the prestigious event, he said, “I think it is a great time to be here, to represent our culture, our colours. I am blessed enough.”
