About 2,000 petrol pumps, predominantly situated in the western and northern regions of India, find themselves devoid of fuel reserves as the strike initiated by certain truckers’ associations reached its second day on Tuesday. Their dissatisfaction centres around the recently enacted hit-and-run law, which they vehemently oppose. This legal update introduces the possibility of a 10-year jail term or a fine of Rs. 7 lakh for truck drivers who leave the scene of an accident without reporting it to the authorities, a significant escalation from the prior Indian Penal Code (IPC) that imposed a maximum 2-year imprisonment for such offenses. Unsurprisingly, this has prompted truck drivers to hit the road, vociferously lambasting the newfound legal constraints.

Amid this chaos, oil tankers designated to transport fuels from refiners’ depots in various locations find themselves stranded. The drivers refuse to operate their vehicles either in protest against the new law or due to concerns about potential reprisals from protestors. This has resulted in prolonged queues at petrol pumps as individuals line up to secure extra fuel, anticipating potential shortages in the future. While the majority stands in line for hours, there’s a group of folks who can’t help but smirk—the Electric Vehicle (EV) owners. In a positive turn, the All India Motor Transport Association (AIMTC) decided to conclude the nationwide truck drivers’ protests after a meeting with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla. The government assured AIMTC members that the new laws have not been enforced yet and will only be implemented after consulting with AIMTC. Although the truckers’ strike reportedly drew to a close late on Tuesday night, ushering in a collective sigh of relief in affected cities, one can’t deny the fact that the day was not without its peculiarities.
