This Lake In USA's Glacier National Park Is Filled With Colourful Rocks

Tucked away in the splendid Glacier National Park of Montana, United States is McDonald which is the largest lake located in the park. The lake is the result of the combination of glacial activity and erosion and has been catching everyone’s attention for its majestic views and stunning setting. The eye-catching colourful pebbles and rocks in the lake make it one of the most attractive tourist places.

What sets this lake apart from around 700 lakes scattered throughout the park are a few factors that are also responsible for creating the coloured rocks. One of them is the temperature of the lake which rarely exceeds 50 degrees Fahrenheit at the surface. This allows visitors to explore at the bottom of the lakes, even as down as 30 feet or so.

Lake McDonald is located on the western side of the Continental Divide and is an alpine lake in Glacier National Park. With an almost fjord-like appearance, the lake is home to many native species including rainbow trout, char, Lake Superior whitefish, cutthroat trout, sockeye salmon and suckers.

There is no requirement for a fishing licence in the national park. The length and breadth of the lake are 10 miles (16 km) and 1 mile (1.6 km) respectively whereas it is 472 feet or 130 meters deep. Surrounded by dense coniferous forests, the lake also has many grizzly bears, black bears, moose and mule deer along its banks. The weather is a little chilly but fresh most of the time. It is the most people-friendly place where families can visit to enjoy a swim.

The rangers at the park say that red rocks found in the lakes were formed when plenty of oxygen was present. On the other hand, the green ones present in the lake are the result of less oxygen in the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the historic Lake McDonald Lodge was built in 1913. It is a perfect base camp for boat tours and horseback rides.
