It’s been over three decades since the 1990 Home Alone film hit theatres, yet it continues to maintain its cult status among viewers. While the little boy’s brilliant tricks take centre stage, another reason to watch Home Alone is the iconic McCallister family home. Located in the picturesque town of Winnetka, Illinois, the red-brick house has become a prime site for fans, attracting tourists to the neighbourhood. Having gone through a radical transformation since Kevin McCallister single-handedly fended off those burglars, the famed house is now up for sale for the first time in 12 years.
According to a Zillow listing, the Home Alone house went on sale last week at 671 Lincoln Avenue. However, those interested would have to fork millions as the 9,000-square-foot structure is priced at $5.25 million (approx Rs 44 crore). It is being brought to the market by Coldwell Banker Realty’s Dawn McKenna Group. With a video, the group shared a sneak peek of the five-bedroom, six-bathroom building on Instagram. While the exteriors look almost the same, the interiors are quite different, as seen in the original film.
Gone are the compartmentalised rooms and dark kitchens, as the rest of the house has been given a massive makeover with sprawling open spaces, a gourmet kitchen, a full bath, and more to explore.

Earlier in 2012, the house was sold for $1.58 million, according to the Zillow page. Later, it was “fully renovated and expanded” in 2018.
However, the fans didn’t seem impressed with the transformation, claiming that the essence had been lost. Users took to the comment section with a range of comments. A user wrote, “If I were rich, I would buy it and redo it to be an exact replica of the movie and turn it into a museum of the film,” while another commented, “No, it doesn’t look familiar because it’s been sterilised beyond recognition.”
“I’m sorry but in my honest opinion whoever redesigned this classic Christmas house did it horribly,” another one remarked, while one shared, “It is Beautiful inside, but it’s not right changing it. They should have kept it the same. Especially changing the kitchen.”
For the unversed, while some of the legendary scenes of Home Alone were shot at the house, the interior sequences were actually filmed at New Trier Township High School.
