New Delhi: Xiaomi, which has announced an update to its MIUI operating system, is aiming to offer users substantial data savings across all apps with its new Android Lollipop-based MIUI 7 operating system.

The new MIUI 7 OS will come with the Data Saver feature (through integration of the Opera Max technology) which is believed to make phones use less data. The company says, the Data Saver feature will help send data such as images and videos to Opera's cloud and compress it before returning it to users' phones.

If the company's claims are to be believed, this new feature can provide up to 50 per cent data savings on mobile data connections.

On turning on the MIUI Data Saver feature on Xiaomi phones, powered by Opera Max compression technology, the service that works across any app on the device stars saving on data consumption.

"This release will also include the latest Opera Max innovations, enabling compression and optimisation of streaming video and audio, including popular services such as YouTube, Instagram, Line, Lazada, among others," says Opera.

The Opera Max technology has been powering the MIUI Data Saver feature for millions of Xiaomi users in China for more than a year.

MIUI 7 will be released for Xiaomi phones in India from August 24.
