Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly expressed his interest in creating “Artificial General Intelligence,” or AGI as it is more commonly referred to. This is a type of artificial intelligence that will surpass human intelligence across most domains. But unlike other companies, he intends to responsibly open source it and make it available to the public.
Announcing the same on Threads, Meta’s X (Twitter) rival, Zuckerberg said in a video that developing the best AI chatbots and assistants requires advances in AI and requires AGI. “It’s become clearer that the next generation of services requires building full general intelligence,” Zuckerberg said. He added, “Our long-term vision is to build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit.”
Notably, this comes after companies, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta itself, are heavily investing in generative AI, continually exploring new ways to enhance their core functions by advancing the Large Language Models (LLMs) behind popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Meta AI. Recently, Google launched Gemini, its latest generation of the LLM family of models, comprising Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano. Meta, too, has introduced its new Llama 2 LLM, which is now contributing to real-world use cases like the Meta AI chatbot and the Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses.
Meta, in particular, is making big moves by bringing its AI research teams “closer together.” It is also building new infrastructure to house about 3,50,000 H100 GPUs from Nvidia that it plans to have by the end of the year.
What Is Artificial General Intelligence?
Many industry experts and AI scientists have expressed concern about AGI and how runaway superintelligence could be harmful to humanity. For example, before Sam Altman was fired from his position as CEO by the OpenAI board, staff researchers at the company wrote a letter to the board of directors expressing concerns that a powerful artificial intelligence discovery could threaten humanity, Reuters reported.
But what really is AGI, you ask? Well, for starters, it would have the ability to come up with a new solution to a task it is unfamiliar with—finding a solution, if you will—much like a human would. These systems are said to possess a complete understanding of how computing works, but as of now, no company has been able to create AGI just yet.
OpenAI, Meta’s rival in the generative AI space, notes that “If AGI is successfully created, this technology could help us elevate humanity by increasing abundance, turbocharging the global economy, and aiding in the discovery of new scientific knowledge that changes the limits of possibility,” but at the very same time, “AGI would also come with serious risk of misuse, drastic accidents, and societal disruption.”
