A US-based author cum actress named Rachel True has been locked out of her iCloud account for the past six months due to a flaw in the service’s code that misinterprets her last name ‘True.’ True said on Twitter that she’s getting the error while trying to sign in to iCloud, putting out a screenshot of the error alongside the tweet. The image shared by True shows an error – Type error: cannot set value ‘true’ to property ‘lastName.’
This makes it appear that iCloud is interpreting Rachel True’s last name as a Boolean flag, and therefore is not able to log her in. In her tweet, True said that she has been logged out for the past six months, further saying that she’s spent hours on the phone with Apple’s support over the issue with no resolution. An Apple executive named Arun Gupta from Apple’s iCloud team responded to True’s call for help, asking the author to DM him on Twitter, in order to proceed with a resolution. This took a whole week for the Apple iCloud team to get a hint of the issue and respond.
Anyone else getting this error from Apple iCloud ? In past or now? I’m 6 months deep freeze & looking for any help. I rem dead coding languages like kobalt.. & this seems like an Apple coding issue — not hardware pic.twitter.com/05EJmG3d6Y— Rachel True (@RachelTrue) February 27, 2021
Rachel says that she has been paying for the service these past few months, and said that Apple should now make this her “new unpaid part time job” as she has spend over two hours on the phone with customer support on multiple occasions.
While forgetting passwords is something pretty common in this digitally-influenced world, a service or website not taking your name as a name is another kind of problem.
