Malayalam cinema started the year on a triumphant note with two small-budget films, Premalu and Manjummel Boys doing extremely well at the box office. While Manjummel Boys also catered well to the Tamil audience due to the depiction of the Guna caves, the romantic comedy Premalu, directed by Girish AD has touched the hearts of the Telugu-speaking audience as well.
Under the banner of Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran bankrolled Premalu. The romance story is set against a visually stunning backdrop of Hyderabad’s colourful culture, which the film brilliantly captures.
The movie has returned an immense profit to its producers and distributors as it was made at a very meagre budget of Rs 3 crore and has earned Rs 115 crore at the box office. Premalu is currently the fifth highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and one of the biggest blockbusters of 2024 to date.
The film collected Rs 9 lakh on the first day. By the first week, Premalu had collected Rs 12.6 crore. Positive word of mouth greatly influenced the business of the film which ended its theatrical run with an impressive Rs 115 crore. While it was released on February 9, the Telugu dubbed version was released on March 8 and the Tamil version was released on March 15. The Telugu version has also been minting money at the box office.
The female lead of Premalu, Mamitha Baiju has also gained fame after the film’s success. Her performance has greatly endeared her to both the Malayalam and Telugu audience. In an earlier interview, Mamitha had said that her favourite actor was Allu Arjun and she wished to do a film with him. Now that she is a known face among the Telugu audience, it may be possible that her dream will be fulfilled soon. Premalu will be available for streaming on Disney+Hotstar from March 29.
