VHP chief meets Modi, wants end to temple demolitions
Ashok Singhal reportedly miffed with Gujarat Chief Minister.

Ahmedabad: Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal on Friday met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to complain against the demolition of temples in Gandhinagar and arrest of a VHP leader.

More than 200 illegal temples have been pulled down in the state capital—a step political analysts say cannot have been taken without Modi’s permission.

Singhal refused to talk to journalists after meeting Modi. "The VHP leader has conveyed his displeasure over the issue of demolition of temples in state capital and also arrest of Ashwin Patel," VHP secretary Ranchhod Bharwad told PTI.

The state government has in the past one month destroyed more than 200 temples, said Bharwad. "Temples are being demolished in other parts of the state also."

Patel has been arrested and booked for sedition for allegedly sending inflammatory SMSes against the state government.

Singhal, who on Thursday visited the places where temples have been demolished, has accused the state Government of acting like Mohammad Gazni, the 10th century invader who destroyed temples in Gujarat.
