Varun Gandhi Gets Notice in 2009 Hate Speech Case
While campaigning as a BJP candidate from Pilibhit in 2009, Varun had drawn a controversy over his alleged hate speeches.

The district sessions court of Pilibhit has issued a notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi in connection with his alleged hate speech during the campaigning for 2009 elections.

The notice comes after a petition was filed by social activist Asad Hayat challenging the earlier acquittal of the MP from the lower court. A lower court in Pilibhit had in 2013 acquitted Varun on grounds of lack of evidence.

Challenging the lower court's decision, Hayat had questioned the failure of investigating agency in getting Varun's voice sample.

The notice dated June 30 has been sent to the office of the Lok Sabha Speaker as a court notice to any elected representative needs to be directed through the Speaker of the house.

While campaigning as a BJP candidate from Pilibhit in 2009, Varun had drawn a controversy over his alleged hate speeches. The then Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh had got cases registered against him under section 153A, 295A and 505/2 of the IPC and Section 125 of the People's Representation Act.

The BJP leader was arrested and National Security Act (NSA) was slapped on him.

However, the investigators later failed to collect any substantial evidence against him resulting in his acquittal in 2013.

Asad had then filed a petition in sessions court challenging the lower court order. Summons were issued but Varun didn't appear before the court.

The petitioner had then prayed for issuing a non bailable warrant against the BJP MP.

The court has now fixed September 30 as the next date of hearing in the case.
