The corruption case that led to the rout of the Congress in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections is casting its shadows on the party again. Almost 25 years after the Bofors scam came to light, Sten Lindstrom, the man who blew the lid off the defence corruption case, has claimed that while former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi did not receive any bribe, yet he failed to stop the massive cover-up in India and Sweden.
Bofors artillery guns later went on to prove their battle worthiness during the Kargil War in 1999, but the name became synonymous with defence scams.
However, with the CBI failing to nail the culprits several questions related to the case have remained unanswered till date.
The unanswered questions:
If there is no evidence that Rajiv Gandhi received any bribes, why did the Opposition gun for him for so long?
Why has the Gandhi family, including Sonia Gandhi, not been questioned on the charge that they 'protected' Ottavio Quattrocchi?
How was Quattrocchi allowed to leave the country so easily and why was he never extradited?
Why was the alleged role of Arun Nehru never fully explained by the investigators?
Why did the BJP-led NDA government when in power choose not to pursue the Bofors pay-offs with greater vigour?
If stories were 'planted' against Amitabh Bachchan, who was behind them?
Was Bofors about a political witchunt as much as about corruption in high places?
