Not all films remain popular even decades after their release. This classic, directed by the legendary Manoj Kumar, is an exception. It was released 43 years ago. We are talking about the multistarrer film Kranti. The movie, released in 1981, had a huge ensemble cast featuring Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha and Parveen Babi. Kranti was an epic tale of a revolutionary farmer’s vow to challenge the British Raj, resonating deeply with the Indian audience through its near-perfect storytelling. The film’s success was further amplified by its blockbuster music and powerful, heart-wrenching emotions, securing its place among the top ten films in the history of Hindi cinema.
Kranti reportedly ran in theatres for 67 weeks and was houseful for 96 days. At the time of its release, Kranti was the fastest earner ever, and went on to become the second highest grossing film of that time, after Sholay. It was declared a Golden Jubilee Hit, and is widely regarded as a cult film. The makers spent approximately Rs 3.1 crore to make this film and it earned a total of Rs 16 crore at the worldwide box office.
This film also marked Dilip Kumar’s return to the screen after a four year hiatus. Manoj Kumar personally convinced the star to make a comeback with his film, as per reports. The film created such a frenzy that in regions like Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, shops began selling Kranti-themed T-shirts, jackets, vests, and even undergarments. The year 1981 was a monumental one for the film industry, with massive blockbusters like Naseeb, Laawaris, Ek Duje Ke Liye, Love Story, and Meri Awaaz Suno, among other hits, but Kranti stood out and topped them all. Even the charm of Amitabh Bachachan, the reigning superstar of that era could not outperform Kranti.
