Sudhakar and Navsadhya, a dynamic married couple, started an inspiring journey of leaving their lucrative IT jobs to embrace organic farming in VK Puram, situated in the scenic Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The couple, motivated by a passion for sustainable living, purchased 11 acres of land in VK Puram, nestled adjacent to the Papanasam forest in Tirunelveli. In addition to organic farming, they judiciously utilise their land for cattle grazing, creating a harmonious blend of agriculture and animal husbandry.
Sudhakar’s roots trace back to Kadayam near Tirunelveli, while his wife, Navsadhya, hails from the Thanjavur district. After years of professional life in bustling cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru, the couple found themselves drawn to the allure of organic farming. Opting for a radical shift, they relinquished their corporate roles and sought knowledge at the Auroville Farm near Puducherry, immersing themselves in the intricacies of agriculture.
In 2018, Sudhakar and Navsadhya materialised their dream by acquiring 11 acres of land, where they built their home. On approximately five and a half acres around their residence, they cultivate a diverse range of crops such as paddy, coconut, banana, and peanuts. The remaining land has been thoughtfully repurposed for cattle grazing. Additionally, the couple cultivates unadulterated black currants in their garden. Their produce, including vegetables, ginger, fruits, flowers, and grains, finds its way to consumers through various online platforms.
Committed to sustainable practices, the couple relies on solar panels for electricity, aligning with their ethos of environmentally conscious living. Sudhakar, along with his wife, child, and parents, revels in the tranquillity of their abode, situated near the enchanting forest. They express their deep affection for the peaceful surroundings, marked by the melodious tunes of birds and the soothing murmur of a nearby waterfall.
In the broader context of Tamil Nadu, Geetha, a resilient 68-year-old woman from Chittanur village in the Sivaganga district, has become an emblem of perseverance and adaptation. After dedicating 45 years to conventional farming, Geetha transitioned to organic farming. Having been a full-time agriculturist since her husband’s demise, she holds a degree in BA Economics, showcasing her intellectual acumen. Encouraged by peers, Geetha has embraced the cultivation of Seerga Samba, a variety of paddy, employing natural and organic methods.
