Kolkata: The battle between the Trinamool Congress and the students of the Presidency University is getting uglier. Five people including a TMC worker have been arrested for ransacking the Presidency University. The TMC has now filed a counter-complaint against the activists of Students' Federation of India in the Presidency University for provoking them.
Two Presidency University students named in the FIR have surrendered, but are expected to be out on bail soon. Those arrested for the ransacking include Shubhojeet Burman and Jayanta Haldar. In a first clear admission of a TMC hand in the ransack, the mother of Shubhojeet has admitted that he is a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad worker.
On Thursday, pictures of TMC Councillor Partha Basu were also released showing him being part of the mob ransacking the university premises. However, Basu still insists neither he nor any TMC cadre were involved in the attack. "I will resign if it can be proved that I was a part of the ransack," he said.
Meanwhile, MK Narayanan will meet students at Presidency University in Kolkata at 4.30 pm on Friday. He has been caught in a political crossfire between the Left and the Trinamool Congress after he asked the CPM to apologise for the attack on West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra by its party cadre in Delhi. The CPM lashed out at Narayanan with General Secretary Prakash Karat writing to President Pranab Mukherjee protesting against the Governor's intervention.
Hundreds of Presidency University students and teachers on Thursday hit the streets protesting the attack on their university. They marched for five kilometres condemning the violence at the prestigious Baker's Lab in Presidency University.
Suspected members of the Trinamool Congress youth wing allegedly barged into the university premises on Wednesday and manhandled them. Armed with sticks, they ransacked the science lab where classes were being conducted. Some teachers were allegedly assaulted too. The attack came despite West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's appeal for non-violent protests.
Female students at Presidency University alleged that the attackers even threatened them with rape. "We were threatened with rape, beaten up. The hooligans threatened me thrice saying if I leave the campus, they'll rape me," said a student.
