Sidhu files paper for Amritsar bypoll
Navjot Singh Sidhu filed his nomination papers on Thursday for the by-election to the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

New Delhi: Armed with the Supreme Court stay on his conviction in a culpible homicide case, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu filed his nomination papers on Thursday for the by-election to the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, setting at rest all speculation over his possible candidature as the BJP nominee.

His Congress rival, Punjab Finance Minister Surinder Singla, too filed his nomination on Thursday.

Sidhu is seeking re-election in the seat, from which he had resigned on December 1 following his conviction by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a case dating back to 1988. He could not file his nomination papers on Wednesday due to the absence of some documents.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has convicted and sentenced Sidhu and his accomplice R S Sandhu to three years in jail and slapped a fine of Rs 1,00,000 for the death of a man in a roadrage case in December 1988.

While Sidhu will fight the bypolls as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he will be supported by alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal. Sidhu was elected from Amritsar in the May 2004 General Election.

Talking to reporters after filing his nomination, Sidhu said he was sure of victory with a bigger majority this time. "I will seek votes on the basis of my performance in the constituency," he said. About his rival, Sidhu said he was a lion while Singla was a lamb as far as this by-election was concerned.
