Rahul Gandhi takes break from politics, looks to skies

Pune: When Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said he wanted his mother to take a break from the rigours of hectic politics, perhaps he was speaking for himself too.

Rahul, who has been in the forefront of his party's electoral battles of late, Wednesday took a break from politics and got down to the brass tacks of the relaxation sport — paragliding at Kamshet, about 50 km from here, sources said.

The 37-year-old Lok Sabha MP — who inherits an instinct to take to the skies from his late father Rajiv Gandhi, a trained pilot, and uncle Sanjay Gandhi, who too evinced a keen interest in aviation — took basic lessons in paragliding at a hill point in village Uskan.

He was instructed by Sanjay Rao who runs the Nirvana Adventure Club where he is learning the nuances of the sports.

Paragliding, which is seen as an enjoyable adventure sport, is practiced from hill-tops when the wind direction is conducive for floating. The club charts out its flights after monitoring the weather forecasts.

Hundreds of police, who have cordoned off the entire area, relentlessly kept mediapersons and public at bay even as the Gandhi family scion left his residential bungalow for the training site at Uskan, a few km away ensconced in a picturesque surrounding that is also a favourite spot for Bollywood filmmakers.

The Amethi MP's visit has been described as a private one by the authorities who were not forthcoming on his schedule of activities for security reasons.
