New Delhi: While some Congress and Samajwadi party leaders have come out in support of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt after the Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in jail in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case and said that he should be pardoned, the BJP has questioned the proposals. While pointing that the law is the same for everyone, the BJP said that Sanjay Dutt has been convicted and sentenced by the country's judicial system.
BJP leader Balbir Punj said that if Sanjay Dutt is pardoned then it will send out a wrong message that people can get away even after committing heinous crimes. He added that people will also see such a pardon as the children of influential parents getting preferential treatment.
Reacting to Press Council of Indian Chairperson Markanday Katju's statement that Dutt should be let off, Punj said that the former Supreme Court judge seems to have forgotten that he is no longer a part of judicial system. "He is now the Chairperson of PCI and he should concentrate on his present work.
The Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and awarded the jail term after taking into account all the evidences. The court gave Dutt to present his side of the story too and only after that the verdict was pronounced. The court verdict must be honoured," he said while adding that he had sympathy for Dutt.
On the other hand former IPS officer YP Singh said that Dutt has been given a very mild jail sentence. The Mumbai Police had a very strong case against Dutt and he was linked to those involved in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, he said.
