The Uttar Pradesh government continues to brazen it out even as the people of Bundelkhand starve because of drought. After state leaders posted selfies enjoying the snow on their junket to Japan, a senior leader insisted that all is well in Bundelkhand.
Senior leader Shivpal Yadav has said that the government has carried out a lot of welfare work in Bundelkhand and that there has been no hunger related deaths. He also said that the Uttar Pradesh government has given free ration to people there.
This comes even as Chief Minister Akhilesh is set to visit drought-hit areas in the state.
Meanwhile, a delegation of 17 MLAs from Uttar Pradesh, led by the Assembly Speaker, is on a 3-nation tour of Japan, Australia and New Zealand for 18 days. The junket comes at a time when farmers in Bundelkhand are battling severe famine and children there are staying alive by eating chapatis with salt.
Bundelkhand – which is divided between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh – is battling famine due to consecutive droughts and hailstorms which destroyed crops. CNN-IBN has reported on how food is scarce there and lakhs of people are fleeing the region to survive.
