New Delhi: In a letter to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, People's Democratic Party Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed requested to immediately withdraw his personal security and that of Mehbooba Mufti, who is an MP.
This comes after Azad, who had a discussion on budgetary demands in the state Assembly, said he would write to the Centre to withdraw troops from the state if MLAs gave in writing that they did not need personal security.
Mufti said it was his party's consistent view that a dignified solution to problems facing Jammu and Kashmir could only come through dialogue and peaceful means.
On several occasions, it had been reported that Azad had linked acceptance of these suggestions to personal security arrangements for politicians who demand it, Mufti said.
"We have been suggesting a gradual reduction of forces, empowerment of the state police and withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act," PTI quoted him saying.
"These steps, we believe, will help in early restoration of peace and improvement in the human rights situation," Mufti said in the letter.
"But, we always thought this could not have come from the Chief Minister as personal security is a subject completely separate from general law and order and political situation of a place," he added.
"Accordingly, I am writing this letter to you to please withdraw my personal security and that of my daughter," said Mufti, who was replaced by Azad as Chief Minister as part of the power-sharing pact between the Congress and the PDP.
