Soon after her landslide victory in the UP polls, Mayawati fired the first salvo against Mulayam Singh Yadav.

New Delhi: Soon after her landslide victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, BSP chief Mayawati on Friday fired the first salvo against arch rival and SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav saying all illegal actions during the Samajwadi Party regime would be probed.

“All illegal acts of the Mulayam Singh Government will be probed. But, this will not be politically motivated. This is not being done out of political vendetta but in the interest of the people," she said at a press conference shortly after she secured an absolute majority in the Assembly.

She also said a high-level inquiry will be ordered into the reported destruction of documents by outgoing SP Minister Azam Khan.

The 51-year-old BSP leader said she had asked the Director General of Police to take immediate legal action on the basis of TV footage of documents being destroyed allegedly at the behest of Khan.

She, however, contended that there would be no witch hunting against her political opponents.

Mayawati, who has accused Mulayam of indulging in corruption and promoting 'jungle raj', said, “Mulayam has already conceded defeat. Marey huey aadmi ko kya marna hai (You can't kill a dead person)? The people have already punished him.”

Mayawati added that the stunning victory of her party had showed that the people of UP have full faith in democracy.

She said the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh will provide a government that will root out corruption and crime and ensure development.

Mayawati, whose social remix formula has done wonders, thanked the upper castes and Muslims for voting in large numbers in favour of the party.

The BSP chief also commended the role of the Election Commission for holding free and fair elections.

The Chief Minister-in-waiting further said that the Opposition parties needed to introspect on their role and that the BSP has given a befitting reply to their "canard and misinformation".

Mayawati said the upper caste people have rejected other forces and voted for her party in a big way. "For this, I thank them along with the Bahujan Samaj voters (Dalits)."

She said the election results showed that people have risen above caste and religion to support BSP.

Maya’s social engineering

It was social engineering and ideology which boosted the BSP to victory, declared a triumphant Mayawati who is poised to become chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the fourth time.

Promising a crime-free government, she said, “After 14 years this is the first time a single party has been returned to power," as jubilant party workers burst firecrackers, danced and smeared each other with gulal.

"A big social change has taken place in Uttar Pradesh and all sections of society has supported the party. Our chalking out a carefully planned strategy has brought this success," a beaming Mayawati told a crowded press conference as shutterbugs refused to stop clicking.

Dressed in her favourite pink salwar-kameez, Mayawati also paid respect by paying floral tributes to life-size statues of Dalit icon BR Ambedkar and her mentor and BSP founder, the late Kanshi Ram.

A beaming Mayawati while accepting bouquets and greetings from the party, which crossed the halfway mark of 202 in an Assembly of 403, said this is an outcome of the long struggle of bahujan samaj sants like Narayan Guru, Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule.

Thanking her party colleagues for the electoral victory, she said it was partymen like Satish Mishra belonging to the upper caste and Muslim leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui who had helped the party build its support base among these sections of society.

While giving them credit, Mayawati subtly asserted her authority saying, "I used to give them the directions and on that basis they carried out the campaign and this had led to the victory of the BSP."
