New Delhi: Dayanidhi Maran's exit from the Union Cabinet as Communications and IT Minister may mean an end to many of his polices that were in the offing, including abolishing roaming charges on mobile phones from June 3.
Maran resigned from his post on Sunday following reported sacking orders from DMK Chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Maran is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday evening to tender his resignation.
He was recognised for hard-selling India to global telecom and IT equipment manufacturers, getting Nokia to set up a manufacturing unit in India, along with Ericsson and Motorola.
His other policies in the pipeline including measures to provide cheaper bandwidth, broadband services and roaming rates, bringing about the 3G policy and divert Internet traffic within the country by hosting servers in India may take a hit with his resignation.
"Our success first came when we launched the Re.1 plan under BSNL and I was planning to abolish roaming charges on June 3, which is the birthday of our leader Karunanidhi," Maran said at a press conference in Chennai, reported IANS.
"I plead with my successor to go ahead with the plan and do it on that day," he added.
