New Delhi: India will be swamped by Chinese products if foreign direct investment (FDI) pours into multi-brand trade, BJP president Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday.
Speaking to the media on the day of a nationwide strike, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said his party was waging a "battle for the existence of poor".
He said stores opened in the wake of the government's decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail will be swamped by products from China, and small traders in India will suffer.
"Products will come from there (China). It will end businesses of small traders. There is a perception that the decision (to allow FDI in retail) has been taken under foreign pressure," Gadkari said.
Gadkari said the party had not yet thought about bringing a no-confidence vote against the Congress-led government.
He said the government had gone for FDI in trade to divert attention from corruption scams.
The BJP president demanded a rollback of decisions on the hike in diesel price, FDI in multi-brand retail and a cap on subsidised cooking gas cylinders.
