Rohtak: The ruling Congress is headed for a massive defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections, party sources have told IBNLive. Congress will be reduced to a little over 20 seats, said a party leader, not wanting to be named.
"Congress will come second in the fray with just over 20 seats. It may be between 21-22 seats, anywhere between 20-25 seats, not more than that," he said.
The party leader working at the grass root attributed the party's loss to the scam tainted image of the previous UPA government and also Congress's drubbing in the 16th Lok Sabha elections.
He, however, said that the 'Narendra Modi card' will not be much effective in a state like Haryana where caste still remains the dominant factor. The numbers revealed by the party insider may spell trouble for the Congress as Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), too, claims that the Congress will fare very poorly in the Assembly elections.
Satish, a member of INLD's media cell, said, "Congress will lose a number of MLAs this time. It will get 20-22 seat or maximum 25."
In what is easily touted as Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's toughest battle yet, Congress is fast losing ground in the state.
When asked if the Congress will form an alliance with regional parties, the party leader said, "Congress will not attempt to make a government if it does not have comfortable numbers."
However, an alliance between the BJP and INLD is something to watch out for, he added.
Congress has 41 MLA in the the current Assembly, while the INLD has 34 and the BJP which is going out of its way to leave a mark in these elections has just four MLAs. An alliance between the BJP and INLD should not come as a surprise as the two have partnered earlier too.
Voting for the 90-member Haryana Assembly is on October 15 and counting will take place on October 19.
