How To Make Kerala-style Malabar Fish Curry At Home

Malayali cuisine is quite popular in India. Kerala has been famous for its mouth-watering dishes, which are enjoyed by a lot of people. Most of the Malayali dishes have meat in them, as people in Kerala are quite fond of fish, chicken, beef and mutton. One of the most popular dishes is the Kerala-style Malabar fish curry.

It is one of the easiest dishes to make at home and can be paired with rice, puttu, chapati, tapioca and more. Malabar fish curry, with its coconut milk gravy, is a dish that’s also popular in major restaurants across the state. So, let’s take a look at the ingredients and recipe to make the scrumptious Malabar fish curry:

Ingredients

Boneless fish pieces – 500 g

Big onion – 2

Tomatoes – 2

Thick coconut milk – 1 cup

Tamarind solution – As per the requirement

Green chillies – 4

Ginger garlic paste – 2 tbsp

Red Chilli Powder – 1 1/2 tbsp

Coriander powder – 1 tbsp

Kashmiri Chilli Powder – 2 tbsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp

Oil – 3-4 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 3/4 tsp

Cumin – 3/4 tsp

Fennel – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves – 3 bunches

Recipe

Start by cleaning and cutting the boneless fish into 2-inch pieces. The next step is to add the coconut pieces to a mixer jar and grind them well. Then, filter the milk and keep it aside. Then take the required amount of tamarind, add water to it, and make a solution of it. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, and curry leaves. Then add a finely chopped onion to it and sauté well. Then, add a little salt to the onion and stir-fry it on medium heat for 10 minutes. Once the onion turns golden brown, add the ginger and garlic paste and fry on low heat for 2 minutes.

Then, add chopped tomatoes to the whole mixture and sauté them on medium heat. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, Kashmiri chilli powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder, and mix it with salt and tamarind solution. As soon as the oil separates, add coconut milk and the required amount of water and mix well and cook for 3 minutes till the oil separates. Once it boils, add the fish pieces, stir gently, cover and cook on low flame for 10 minutes. Then, add salt if required and boil it. The Malabar fish curry is ready. Serve it with rice.
