Chandigarh: Riding on the support of nominated councillors, ruling Congress swept the Mayoral polls of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation in Chandigarh on Sunday.
All the three posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor went in the Congress' kitty.
Raja Bala Malik of the Congress will be the city's 18th Mayor. She secured 21 votes as against 12 secured by BJP's Asha Jaiswal. BSP's candidate Janat Jahan secured just two votes.
The post of Senior Deputy Mayor was won by Darshan Kumar Garg of the Congress, who secured 23 votes as against 13 by Des Raj Gupta, whereas Satish Kainth of the Congress will be the new Deputy Mayor.
Both the ruling Congress and main opposition BJP had a close finis in the elections to 26 wards of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, results of which were declared on December 22.
The tally of the parties in the 26-member elected civic body is Congress-11, BJP-10, its ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) two, BSP two and one Independent.
The Corporation has a total strength of 36 members, including 26 elected councillors, nine nominated councillors and one MP.
