BJP calls minority count atrocious
BJP called for the immediate doing away of Congress' move to prepare religion-based demographic statistics.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday came down heavily on the Centre and called for immediate doing away of its move to prepare religion-based demographic statistics for minority funding.

The BJP alleged that this move of the Centre is aimed to divide the country on communal lines.

"It is atrocious to communalise the nation's geography. UPA has already communalised budgets, bankings and education. The country will not allow it to be divided on communal lines," BJP spokesman Prakash Javadeker was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Javadeker reaction comes after the move launched by the minority affairs ministry to compile population data of religious groups in order to ensure that welfare funds sanctioned for minorities reach the targeted sections.

The BJP spokesman recalled that the BJP was opposed to a similar plan way back in 1992, when the Congress was in power.

"We then forced the Narasimha Rao government to withdraw that scheme. We want this government also to scrap it," he was quoted as saying.
