Sankarankoil: Accusing the AIADMK government of plunging Tamil Nadu into darkness, DMK president M Karunanidhi on Thursday accused it of not having the intention to operationise the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant that could give 1,000 MW of electricity to the power-starved state.
"AIADMK government could not give power to the suffering people and it has no intention to go ahead with the implementation of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant scheme that will give 1,000 MW power immediately," Karunanidhi said addressing the election campaign in support of his party nominee J Jawahar Suryakumar for the March 18 Assembly bypoll in the constituency.
The DMK leader said Jayalalithaa came to rule by promising that she would improve power situation but people started realising that the present situation is not shortage of power but "no power at all."
Hitting out at the AIADMK government, he said Jayalalithaa had tried to block implementation of Samacheer Kalvi, introduced during the DMK regime. But the High Court and the Supreme Court favoured the scheme, he said.
Referring to the government's decision to convert the Anna Centenary Library, built during DMK regime, into a hospital, he wondered how can Jayalalithaa run a party with the name of Anna when she wanted to convert the library built after his name.
Warning that the party could even take the issue to the Supreme Court, the DMK leader said, "If Jayalalithaa continues to be adamant in her act (of converting the library into a hospital), even after High Court and Supreme Court's rulings, that will be the day when Karunanidhi will commit self immolation."
He accused the AIADMK government of foisting false cases against his party cadre.
Karunanidhi said the Dravidian Movement started by Periyar and Anna would continue and none can crush it.
