A speech against politicians does not invite sedition charges: Maharashtra government
The Maharashtra government has issued some guidelines on slapping of sedition charges on any person.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has issued some guidelines on slapping of sedition charges on any person. The move comes after the Bombay High Court mentioned guidelines on circumstances under which Section 124A can be slapped.

The observations of the Bombay High Court had come in connection with the arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi.

The government has sent the guidelines to all police stations across Maharashtra, asking them to duly adhere to the same.

There are three guidelines issued in this regard. These are:

- If words, signs aimed at state/Central government are aimed at inciting violence/creating public disorder, then Section 124A can be slapped.

- Writing or speech against politicians by itself can't be sedition unless they are shown as representatives of government.

- Writing or speech expressing disapproval of government and criticising government seeking a change in government by lawful means is not seditious.

It further said that police should seek the opinion of the district law officer before slapping the section.

What's your reaction?
