KOCHI: About 48 percent of the MLAs (67 MLAs of the 140) in the new Assembly have criminal cases pending against them as per their own declarations. Of these, 12 have declared serious IPC charges like attempt to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide and others against them, says a statement issued by Election Watch Kerala after analysing the affidavits of all 140 MLAs.
All the major parties have MLAs with pending criminal cases against them. CPM has 21, INC has 23 out of 38 analyzed (61 percent), IUML has eight and CPI has five with pending criminal cases. Interestingly, the number of crorepati MLAs in the new Assembly has increased to 35 from eight MLAs in 2006.
Kuttanad MLA Thomas Chandy (NCP) leads the list of crorepati MLAs with declared assets worth Rs 45 crore. Perinthalmanna MLA Manjalamkuzhi Ali (IUML)is behind with Rs 14 cr followed by Vattiyoorkavu MLA K Muraleedharan (INC) with Rs 10 crore. Chavara MLA Shibu Baby John (RSP-B), Kothamangalam MLA T U Kuruvila (KC[M]) and Kalpetta MLA M V Shreyamskumar (SJD) are among the Rs 8 crore+ category.
Tirurangadi MLA Pandikkadavath Abdurab (IUML), Paravoor MLA V D Satheesan (INC) and Konni MLA Adoor Prakash (INC) are in the Rs 4 crore category and Thrissur MLA Therambil Ramakrishnan (INC) has Rs 3 crore.
Among the MLAs with liabilities over Rs 50 lakh are Manjalamkuzhi Ali with Rs 6 cr, Shibu Baby John with Rs 1 crore, T U Kuruvila with Rs 2 crore, and Manjeswaram MLA Abdul Razak P B (IUML) with Rs 80 lakh, Piravom MLA T M Jacob with Rs 75 lakh and Adoor Prakash with Rs 50 lakh.
