Gautam Gambhir Points Out Difference Between Rohit Sharma and Previous India Captains With 'Secure Dressing Room' Claim
Rohit Sharma is aiming to become the third India captain to win an ODI World Cup trophy.

Gautam Gambhir has lavished praise on the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, crediting him for instilling a sense of security inside the Indian dressing room.

Rohit-led India have entered the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 unbeaten, winning all their nine matches and will next take on New Zealand for a place in the final.

Gambhir, who won the ODI World Cup in 2011, says that not a lot has changed between the 2019 and 2023 world cup barring the confidence that Rohit has displayed publicly in his player.

“Look, there is nothing which has changed from 2019 to 2023. There were so many changes that happened in 2019 as compared to the least amount of changes that has happened in 2023,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“A good captain and leader give you security, which makes the dressing room secure, not only for himself but for the other 14 players as well. And Rohit Sharma has done that. That’s why he has won five IPL trophies; that’s where his winning ratio when he started playing all those international games has been fabulous,” he added.

Gambhir says while Rohit has proven his leadership skills by winning plenty of trophies as captain but the impact he has had on the dressing room is more important.

“If you go by the stats and the trophies, he (Rohit) ticks all the boxes,” Gambhir said. “But the most important thing is he has made that dressing room a very secure dressing room. When the captain comes out and talks in his post-match presentation that he believes in his players and gives them longer runs, it makes you believe how much your captain is backing you. And that is the difference between Rohit Sharma as a leader, compared to some other captains that have captained previously for India.”

In his world cup as India captain, Rohit guided India to the semis of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Earlier this year, he captained them in the final of the ICC World Test Championship in England where India finished as the runners-up.

He’s now aiming to become the third Indian to win an ODI World Cup as captain after Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2011).
