The passion for Indian cricket was on full display as more than 30,000 fans sang Vande Mataram in unison at the Wankhede Stadium. This moment of patriotic fervour emerged during India’s semi-final clash against New Zealand on November 15. The atmosphere was already electric with some global stars in attendance including the likes of David Beckham, Sachin Tendulkar, Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and many more.
During the second innings of the match, the massive crowd spontaneously sang AR Rahman’s rendition of Vande Mataram. The wonderful sight of thousands of blue jerseys singing together was enough to send shivers down the spines of the onlookers. Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals uploaded a video of the moment on X while writing, “Song of the night. Emotion of the World Cup.”
Several fans have now reacted to the bone-chilling moment in the comments section. One of the replies read, “Pure goosebumps..!! A proud nation celebrating a great victory in the semi-final. Thank you, team India.”

One of the users highlighted the importance of Wankhede as a venue in Indian cricket. He wrote, “No stadium in India can match the vibe of Wankhede Stadium be it Motera, Eden, Chennai or Chinnaswamy. We also won the 2011 World Cup here and after today’s sf victory and Kohli’s 50th ODI century this venue becomes even more special.”

This wasn’t the first time that Indian fans had created such an ambience at the ongoing World Cup. A similar sight was also visible at India’s match against Pakistan in the group stage of the tournament. More than 1,00,000 fans sang the national song at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat as India went on to win the match by seven wickets. The same occurred during India’s clash against England at the Ekana Sports City Stadium in Lucknow where more than 47,000 spectators combined to sing Vande Matram. The floodlights of the stadium were also dimmed later for a laser show, adding to the already electric environment.
It seems like the patriotism of Indian fans and their passion for the sport has paid off massively for the national team. The Men in Blue did not lose a single game in the group stage before beating New Zealand in the semi-finals by 70 runs. Crucial knocks from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer got things going in the opening innings before Mohammed Shami stole the show in the second half. The Indian pacer dismissed seven New Zealand batters, helping India seal a place in the World Cup final. The ultimate match is scheduled at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19.
