Dune Part 2 Director And Timothee Chalamet Have This To Say About Infamous Popcorn Bucket
The sandworm popcorn bucket designed for Dune 2 gets hilarious reactions from fans after becoming a viral sensation on the internet.

As the highly anticipated release of Dune Part Two, featuring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, draws closer, early reviews are already pouring in. With the first installment securing six Oscars, expectations are high for the sequel to make a splash at the 2025 Academy Awards. One of the standout features of the film is the majestic sandworms of Arrakis, which command attention on the big screen. In a bold marketing move, AMC theatres in the US unveiled a sandworm-inspired popcorn bucket to coincide with the film’s release. While some praised the creativity behind the design, others couldn’t help but draw comparisons to adult toys. The cast and crew of Dune, including director Denis Villeneuve and Timothee Chalamet, couldn’t resist commenting on the unique bucket, adding a touch of humour to the promotional campaign.

During a promotional interview with The New York Times, the filmmaker said, “I don’t want to make stupid jokes right now that will I regret tomorrow morning. But I will say this. When I saw it, I went, ‘Hoooooly smokes.’ What the? At the same time, it created a lot of fun online. So maybe it’s positive? It’s some kind of impressive design. I respect a bold choice. At the end of the day, it seems that bucket brought a lot of laughter and joy”

Timothee Chalamet added, “I can’t tell if someone is at home right now going, ‘My design worked perfectly and everyone’s talking about it.’ Or if someone’s brutally offended by the response.” Further, when the actor jokingly told the director, “You were not personally involved in the design process.” Dennis dodged taking credit for the creation, and humorously responded “I thought you were.”

Earlier, talking about the sandworm popcorn bucket, which costs around $25 (approximately Rs 2,000), an AMC insider told Hollywood Reporter, “It’s a fun moment that brought some attention to the movie. It falls under the old adage, ‘no publicity is bad publicity.’ The SNL sketch was a pleasant surprise. That was not something that was pitched as a moment for the movie.”

The Dune franchise, adapted from Frank Herbert’s novel, brings the epic saga to life under the direction of filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. While the story was earlier adapted in 1984 by David Lynch and in a 2000 limited series by John Harrison, Villeneuve decided to take a fresh approach with a humongous budget. Meanwhile, the excitement for the movie reached new heights when Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya were hired for the lead roles of Paul Atreides and Chani, respectively.

Apart from Timothee and Zendaya, Dune: Part Two also features Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Lea Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem. The movie is set to hit theatres on March 1, 2024.
