Indian cinema has witnessed a surge in biopics centred on political figures in recent years, showcasing the lives and legacies of influential leaders. Notable examples include PM Narendra Modi, featuring Vivek Oberoi; Thalaivi, starring Kangana Ranaut; and Queen, led by Ramya Krishnan. Among these, the 2019 film Yatra, starring Mammootty, portrayed the journey of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. The sequel of Yatra, titled Yatra 2, was recently released on Feb 8 with high expectations.
Reports suggest significant excitement among fans, even in smaller districts, awaiting the film’s release. Special screenings and shows are being organised by supporters, gathering outside theatres since early morning. Particularly in regions like Rajahmundry, Rural Kakinada and Amalapuram, where YSR enjoyed considerable support, fans have eagerly prepared for the film’s unveiling. Notably, current Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, YSR’s son, is expected to watch the film along with other party members in select districts, underlining the political significance of the narrative.
Furthermore, a special 7:30 a.m. show has been arranged to accommodate the demand, with many fans expressing their intention to watch the film multiple times. The recently released trailer for Yatra 2 has garnered an overwhelming response, offering a glimpse into the period following YSR’s demise up to YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s assumption of power. Jiiva’s portrayal of Mohan Reddy is anticipated to capture the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh during this critical period.
Directed by Mahi V. Raghav, Yatra 2 also features Ketaki Narayan, Suzanne Bernert, Mahesh Manjrekar and Ashrita Vemuganti Nanduri in supporting roles. As audiences eagerly await the sequel’s release, the film promises to delve deeper into the political saga of YSR and its enduring impact on Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape.
