Elizabeth Debicki, known for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, shared her reasons for joining the cast of director Ti West’s action thriller, MaXXXine. In an interview with TheWrap, Debicki revealed that she had previously avoided working in horror films. “I’ve specifically avoided it for a while,” Debicki told the outlet.
MaXXXine is the third instalment in West’s X film series and a direct sequel to X (2022). The film stars Mia Moth who has reprised her role as Maxine Minx. Debicki, in the film, takes on the role of Elizabeth Bender, a British filmmaker directing Maxine in her first movie. The other cast members include Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon. MaXXXine hit the theatres on July 5.
Debicki shared that she was intrigued by the film due to its emphasis on strong performances. “Ti and Mia have really opened up a space for that character and that performance to really live,” she explained.
Talking about the horror genre, Debicki shared that these types of films can provide an “expansive” range of possibilities. “I think it takes a lot of courage,” she added.
Debicki described her experience working with West as a “leap of faith.” She highlighted that these projects need a clear vision, emphasising the vulnerability involved in such “extreme places” and the potential of delivering iconic performances.
The actress acknowledged that horror films are intense and thought she could not do that.
“I’m very suggestible and I don’t know if I could see it,” Debicki said. The actress admitted that she doesn’t watch a lot of modern horror movies.
Elizabeth Debicki found the MaXXXine script “vivid and cinematic and funny” which excited her to work in the film.
After signing the project, Debicki watched West’s earlier instalments, X and Pearl, which she loved.
Further, Debicki shared that she enjoyed playing Elizabeth in the film. “I liked playing her a lot. She’s a really powerful woman, she’s not very nice. It’s hugely refreshing to play [someone] who didn’t care what anybody thought. I felt very free in her. There’s definitely some catharsis playing a director,” Debicki said.
Debicki has received a Golden Globes for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the drama series, The Crown.
The actress made her film debut in 2011 with the Australian comedy A Few Best Men. Her other projects include The Great Gatsby, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Tenet.
