Mumbai: With popularity in digital content growing by the day, it was a natural choice for Jio MAMI 17th Mumbai Film Festival to create a category called ‘PLAY’ which showcased short films that have gone viral in the recent past as well as some that are soon going to release online. On Sunday, the section screened the best of internet films – sketches, short films and web series - with the young and talented YouTube sensations like All India Bakchod (AIB), The Viral Fever (TVF), East India Comedy (EIC), SNG Comedy and Aditi Mittal presenting their respective films.

The audience watched popular shorts like ‘Ahalya’, ‘Best Girlfriend’, ‘Permanent Roomates’,‘Honest Indian Weddings’ among others. There were also several new shorts that premiered at the festival and are due to go online in the coming weeks.

The original Yash Raj Films YouTube series from their youth studio, Y-Films, ‘Bang Baaja Baaraat’ also premiered at ‘PLAY’. The web series is a hilarious take on what happens when two families from different backgrounds come together for a wedding. The series is directed by Anand Tiwari, written by Sumeet Vyas, and features Ali Fazal, Angira Dhar, Rajit Kapur, Shernaz Patel, Gajraj Rao, Ayesha Raza and Neil Bhoopalam, who were all present at the venue for the red-carpet premiere. The series got lots of laughter and loud applause from the audience.

Post the film screening, a panel discussion on the future of digital content in India, featuring prominet faces of internet world: Tanmay Bhat (AIB), Biswapati Sarkar (TVF), Satya Raghavan (YouTube India Content Head), Alex Kuruvilla (MD, Conde Nast India), Smita Jha (Executive Director, PwC India) and Sujoy Ghosh was held. It was moderated by ‘PLAY’ curator, Nikhil Taneja.

Tanmay Bhat from AIB made a huge announcement at the panel. For the first time since their inception, AIB will be getting into Fiction with an original series. Bhatt said, the comedy collective will be revealing more about it next week.
