The much talked about film 'The Revenant' has released and almost everyone has reaffirmed their views on how Leonardo DiCaprio should finally win the Oscars for his stupendous performance in the film.
I'd like to take a moment here and focus on this incredible talent called Tom Hardy. Now most Batman fans may have been familiar with the voice which is rather different and a bit unnerving. You may have also marveled at his talent in films like 'Inception', 'Legend', 'Warrior' and the recent 'Mad Max: Fury Road' but in 'The Revenant' Hardy ups his ante and in some scenes, dare I say, overshadows DiCaprio.
Hardy plays the antagonist John Fitzgerald in the film who is ruthless, shrewd and conniving. Of course, one could argue that in a film, a strong antagonist always appeals more than the do-gooder protagonist. Agreed. But it ultimately depends on the actor who portrays the role onscreen and how he does it. Hardy makes Fitzgerald a person who sees convenience before anything else. In his head, he is right and convinced of the mayhem he is creating
A scene in the second half has a group of huntsmen realizing suddenly that Glass (DiCaprio) might not be dead which Fitzgerald had told otherwise. As he learns about Glass's remarkable survival, he remains nonchalant on the outside - not showing how much he is panicked inside. The kind of ease with which Hardy performs the crucial is a class act for sure. And as a viewer, you are more intrigued about Fitzgerald's next move than Glass attempt at surviving.
There is something inherently cool about Tom Hardy. He plays complicated characters on screen with utmost ease making the villain look desirable.
Hardy has been nominated for his role in 'The Revenant' in the best supporting actor category at the Oscars. While Sylvester Stallone is the hot favourite in this category to clinch the golden statue, it is Hardy who deserves to win. Because not only is the film physically taxing but also set in an era of which very little is documented. But Hardy gets the American drawl right (he is British actor with a British accent) and transforms himself ingeniously.
Villains are meant to be loathed. But somehow Hardy makes you root for Fitzgerald.
